Going car free

After 30 years of almost continuous car ownership (a couple of months between cars around 20 years ago), my Toyota finally gave up the ghost in the first week of January on the M5.

We’d been debating about getting rid of the vehicle for some time – our annual mileage is low (3-4,000); we use public transport, or cycle, or walk when we’re in London; there are always bills with a car, and (from a more altruistic perspective), there are too many vehicles in London.

So, rather than rush out and get a new set of wheels to replace Japan’s finest, the idea is to see how we survive without a car for the next six months. There’ll be cash savings, but what about the inconvenience – having to grab a cab for a short journey when it’s pouring with rain; renting a car to go away for a weekend or visit family – and will we find it limiting? Last year we could stick the bikes on the car and head off to the New Forest for the day, or drive down to the coast when the weather was fine without worrying about planning ahead. Will our quality of life improve, or get worse?

Well, here we go.
